The supplied handler checks the selected dunk mode, held controls, movement, and busy states. A first press made before the approach can be locked without starting the override. Becoming eligible later while still holding is not the same as releasing and making a new press.
Use a clean retry
Release the activation button, clear other actions, approach, and press again. For Circle/B mode include sprint; for either mode keep the left trigger released. This isolates the activation rule before considering shot timing or game animation requirements.
Describe what actually happened
No assistance started and assistance started but the dunk failed are different reports. A continuous input clip helps distinguish them. Do not label a locked earlier press as a newly measured accuracy defect, and do not assume the input routine guarantees the game’s final result.
